This past Saturday, Mark and I attended the Mobile Tech 4 Social Change Barcamp in New York City hosted by MobileActive.org at Hunter College’s Integrated Media Arts Program. A barcamp, also known as anunconference_, follows a more informal model from standard conferences: it’s designed to promote conversation and collaboration that may otherwise occur among small groups during free time at more traditional conferences. Mark and Emily spent this week in Boston where they met with several people at MIT’s Center for Future Civic Media. In addition, they were the guest lecturers at Digital Democracy, an undergraduate course taught by Patrick Meier at Tufts University. Before the class, the students were encouraged to post responses to assigned readings (including our own Overcoming Obstacles, Creating Opportunities, and Year of the Rats, as well as Drowningby George Packer) on the class’s blog. The class combined lecture and discussion, and during the second half, the student’s were asked to tweet* their responses to problems and questions that arose as the class progressed. The discussion centered on technology and effective communication in and around Burma, as well as possible barriers to this communication. Read more…
This week, D2’s Co-Directors Mark and Emily are attending the Fifth Annual United Nations’ Web4Dev Conference, hosted by UNICEF. Web4Dev has re-united them with many of the other participants they met while presenting at the MobileActive 08 Conference in Johannesburg back in October including InSTEDD and Ushahidi. Thursday explored many themes including monitoring and evaluation, which included a presentation by InSTEDD’s Robert Kirkpatrick exploring their projects which include, GeoChat, Mesh4X, and a new project, Evolve. This past week completed a long month of proposal-writing for us. When we’re writing, it’s hard not to get wrapped up in a single proposal, or the smaller themes that run throughout each one. After we’ve completed one, we like to get an overview of our work, to see what is and isn’t being emphasized as we describe our organization and the more specific details of our various projects. By looking at the bigger picture, we can see the changing themes in our writing, and what could be altered or kept the same when we tackle our next one. To do this, we create word clouds from our proposals. The cloud is created from the most frequently used words in the document. In addition, the words within the cloud vary in size depending on frequency of usage. The most interesting comparison can often be looking at word clouds from several different proposals side by side.
